Wheelchair Trails

In 2023 I was exploring Perth in a new way as an ambulatory wheelchair user due to chronic and severe plantar fasciitis after a plantar fascia rupture in January of that year.

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, so injuries are common for me and over the last decade I've become accustom to using a variety of medical aids such as joint support braces but in 2023 crutches and eventually a wheelchair were used for several months when longer walks were necessary. I found it difficult to find info online about wheelchair accessible trails, so I decided to share the ones I found.

Eventually in November of 2023 after exhausting all conservative approaches I underwent foot surgery and was eventually back to walking comfortably several months later. But with a greater understanding and respect for wheelchair users and a hope that this page helps some people to enjoy the outdoors.

My rating system:

πŸ’š great trail,  give it a go!

🧑 more challenging but still enjoyable.

❀️ strenuous and not recommended.

My wheelchair is a fairly standard store bought chair, not a custom chair:

and it handled these trails well so they are trails I've tried and recommend for other wheelchair users:

Other ideas worth trying:

I've walked these during 2023 and they are all have heaps of sealed path too that would be accessible!

Black Swan Island (there are both asphalt and gravel trails all the way around the island, the gravel path is closer to the water though)

Yangebup Lake  (concrete/asphalt all the way around)

Lake Richmond - Rockingham (concrete/asphalt all the way around)

Lake Monger - Wembley (concrete/asphalt all the way around)

Lake Claremont  (concrete/asphalt all the way around)

Booyeembara Park- Fremantle (concrete/asphalt loops available)

Kent St Weir

Shelley Foreshore
