3 Things I Learned my First Time Snorkeling

Today hubby and I went snorkeling for the first time.  I had never snorkelled before.  We snorkelled at Point Peron in Rockingham,  Western Australia.  The waters are part of a protected marine park.

We snorkelled for a couple of hours,  the ocean flora was like an undersea wildflower garden! We saw about a dozen different sorts of fish.
As a beginner,  I figured out three tips for others like me new to snorkeling:
  1. Relax and let the sea life below entertain you,  you don't need to "swim" around a lot to enjoy the experience and in fact, you're probably scaring half the fish away if you do.
  2. Breathing through the snorkel gear is easiest when you totally relax and don't try to control your breathing,  this can be a tricky thing at first if you are an anxious person.
  3. Check the safety of the area before entering the water.  Do your research to find great places abundant with sea life but... know that if you do there's often a risk of sharks in those same waters.
Only two hours after we left Point Peron yesterday a shark alert was active for a shoal of ten sharks in the exact area we were snorkeling! Here in WA we have a great website available:
