More Trail Running Tips for Beginners

The destination matters!

Beginners should research trails and seek out trails that are:

  • shorter - one mile is enough for the first month or two if you are a true beginner! I use the 'All Trails' app.
  • Work up to trails that are uneven and rocky, start on easier trails or walk on the rocky uneven areas
  • Views can inspire you to enjoy running! Look for trails that have a great viewpoint.
If possible vary your running trails regularly to prevent boredom.

In warmer weather (late Spring thru Summer and early Fall) carry a water bottle especially if there is no shade, mine is usually half frozen so it stays cold.

It's also great to track your running using a cell phone app or smartwatch (I use a Garmin HR smart watch) so I can see progress over time with my pace/distance etc.

Today I chose a trail that I had hiked before but never done a trail run on. It was a perfect trail for running, I'll definitely go there again ❤️ The view out over Franktown Colorado is terrific:

It's a fairly arid mesa with lots of rock along the Eastern side of the Chuck's Loop trail.
There were lots of wildflowers and it's greener than I've ever seen it:
There were even a few trees to catch my breath under:
Trail: Chuck's Loop (Gateway Mesa Open Space near Castle Rock, Colorado).
